Libertarian Candidate Polls 7% Statewide!
by John Karr

This year we had one Candidate on the Statewide Judicial Ballot, the story that hasn’t gotten out is that she received the support of 7% of the voters! In addition we elected nine candidates to minor offices around Pennsylvania.

Marakay Rogers, received 127,406 votes, because she was running for Superior Court, where voters choose 4, her total is reported as 2%, but when we take 1,776,398 who voted for Supreme Court as an approximation of the total votes cast in the Judicial Elections, she has an impressive 7.17%.

Here in Philadelphia her numbers were not as good. Philadelphia reported a total of 130,985 voters (12.39% of registered voters) of whom 119,813 cast a vote for Supreme Court, that leaves Marakay with 2.37% calculated against Supreme Court Voters and 2.17% against total ballots. Keep in mind that some voters did not vote for any Judges. There is no data available either statewide or citywide for the actual number of persons who voted for at least 1 Judicial Candidate. Around Philadelphia results varied: For Wards 1,2,5, and 18 which combined cover the Center City east of Broad Street from Mifflin to Spring Garden plus Northern Liberties and Fishtown, Marakay received 4.4% but in Wards 8,30, and 36 which are Broad west to the Schuylkill River Mifflin to Spring Garden she only polled 2.67% barely above the City Average, yet in the University City’s Ward 27 she polled 5.81%.

Elsewhere in Pennsylvania of 16 Libertarians on the ballot for various municipal offices, 9 were elected, which is impressive, even if the wins were all for minor offices. Of those not elected, our candidates put up good numbers in bigger races, a Council Candidate in Reading received 19% of the vote, two mayoral candidates in smaller municipalities polled over 20% and one Candidate received 15% for Sherriff.

The implications of the results from Philadelphia -- that our strength is in the Center City Area East of Broad up into Fishtown -- suggest that we should really try to get candidates in that area. That whole area happens to be in Congressman Brady’s District. Even though we didn’t do as well in the Northeast as Center City, a lot of attention will be on John Perzel’s seat next November, and it is only 300 signatures to get a candidate for State Rep on the Ballot.

Racing to Regulate
by Anthony Perrella II

After two recent hit-and-run pedestrian deaths, councilmen Frank DiCicco and Jim Kenney responded the only way they could think of – regulations and fines. Kenney called for increasing the fine for riding on the sidewalk from $10 to $300. DiCicco floated an idea requiring that all bicycles ridden by people 12 and up be registered and bear a license plate.

Now, the hit-and-run deaths are serious, and bicyclists have long been violating the law against riding on sidewalks and ignoring traffic laws. But these proposed solutions? Once again, we see the wondrous creativity of our local politicians on display, drawing from their vast repertoire of tax, fine and regulate.

I have never seen the sidewalk fine enforced. How will raising the fine make the city safer? If you get side-swiped by a bicyclist you feel better knowing that IF they were to get apprehended their fine would be 30x more?

License plates on bikes? Perhaps this will help the Manayunk bike racers cut down on infractions. Someone cuts you off, jot down their license plate number and call the police. Really, how practical is this? Will it actually be easier to identify a bicyclist by reading a tiny plate than by getting a physical description of the person?

Just when the city tries to make Philly more bicyclist-friendly by putting in designated bike lanes, it threatens to shoo them away by regulating them. It’s tough enough for bicyclists, who have to deal with the hazards of reckless motorists, potholed city streets, and having to practically unassemble a bike down to its frame if they’re going to lock it outside.

I did a Google search on bicycle license plates and found only novelty kiddie ones. That’s about the only practical use of the things.

At our last meeting a participant suggested that we have an online Forum.

As part of the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania website we have had our own child forum available to us for some time, we just haven’t been using it. The LPPA site has a very active forum and I encourage you to visit it regularly, and drop in on the Philadelphia Discussion Section.
